You must chisel the Pokemons health down before you can catch it depending on the type of Pokeball you have. If the Pokemon faints you can catch it but you cannot use it tell you restore its health

You can also befriend a pokemon that will follow you loyally but you actually have not caught it. The pokemon is more of a companion that can come and go as it pleases.
