Fern rolls her eyes. “Whatever you say Snidely.” she begins to walk a little faster. “This walk might take a while, unless we take a cab. The place we’re going is outside of the city.”
-
Snidely raises an eyefeather (or whatever the chicken equivalent of an eyebrow is) and takes a long drag from his cigarette then throws it on the ground, stomping it out as he walks by, “Outside off the city?” he asks, glancing at Fern as if she was speaking a different language, “What the hell are you talking about? There’s nothing outside of the city.” He shoved his wings in his pockets, “nothing important anyway…”
-
Fern’s eyes roll. “Maybe not that you know of. I live in a small town just outside of here. It’s nice, and calming. There’s a lot of important things out there.” she looks at Snidely, nodding.
-
“Yeah, sure…” Snidely mumbles under his breath, not wanting to leave the city but being in deeper trouble with the law than usual. He had never been outside of the city before and the thought of it repulsed him slightly, NCC was his world, he could barely comprehend leaving it.
-
Fern slows down her pace so she ends up walking beside him. “So, how has your day been?”
-
“Same as ever, pretty shit.” He sighs, crossing his wings, “it’s only like 3:00 and I’ve already been chased by the cops and now I have to leave the city,” snidely mumbles, looking down at the cement of the sidewalk, “This day just gets better and better.”
-
Fern rolls her eyes. “Well, Mr. Sarcastic, why don’t you try and look more at the positive things in life, that might make your day better.” she smiles, holding her book bag to her chest.
-
“Nothing in my life is positive…” Snidely mutters to himself with a sigh and looks back up at Fern, “What’s got you so chipper all the time anyway? You’re in school, right? School was crap, shit don’t make you smile at school.” He scowls at the memory.
-
“Well, school is fun for me, I have all my friends in all of my classes and I learn new things. It’s nice. I guess I have just a positive life.” Fern shrugs. “How was school for you?”
-
“It was like a prison, they would check between our feathers for drugs and shit when we walked in, the teachers main job was to keep us in the classrooms and to keep the gangs from breaking out into mini turf wars, I dropped out midway.” Snidely sighs, hating the memories of those days.
-
“Huh,” Fern nods, looking at Snidely. “It doesn’t seem like you had much fun there.”
-
He scowls and mutters to himself, “that’s the understatement of the century…” Snidely wasn’t really used to talking about himself and doing so made him feel kinda weird, so he stretched out his wings and said in an effort to change the subject, “anyway, we’ve been walking forever, are we there yet?”
-
Fern chuckles. “Yeah, almost!” she looks around. The area is a normal neighborhood, normal sized houses, just a normal neighborhood. Fern sighs, “Well, this is where I live.”
-
Snidely looks the house up and down, “The whole thing?” Snidely asks, putting his wings in his pockets. Having never been outside of the city, seeing such a large home was almost alien to him, with everything being high-rise buildings with tiny coops just big enough for one chicken.
-
“I live in one of the homes, it’s right next to the Church, and that’s where we’ll be going!” Fern smiles softly, Â beginning to walk down the sidewalk.
