The Original Illuminati’s mission statement is the only thin the New Illuminati kept.
Originally, The Illuminati sought to “… forcibly merge Assiah and Gehenna and “return the world to the original state from which both darkness and light originated”, during which they also plan to completely revive Satan, the lord of all Demons. In doing so, they hope to bring the divided worlds together and make every living being equal to one another, thereby creating a world free of affliction and one of true peace.” (Source: Ao no Exorcist Manga: Chapter 49, Pages 16-17)
The problem with this plan is that Satan’s agenda is more sinister as a visit to The Road to Gehenna’s Gates revealed. But there was also a secret agenda among the more malicious and powerful demons. “Underneath the surface, however, the Illuminati conducted experiments on how to force-possess Demons into a human being.” (Source: Ao no Exorcist Manga: Chapter 51, Page 6)
The Illuminati were run by:
Commander-in-Chief Lucifer. This dangerous less powerful Lucifer was created by Satan to trick people into thinking that he was the true backer of this organization. The demon in question was actually only a knight, coincidentally named: Rushiferu. One of the strongest and among Satan’s favored of the Order of the Eight Demon Knights.Dual Agent / Spy: Renzou Shima confessed of his involvement with the Illuminati. This is why he had been easily possessed by Satan.

*When Inu received the information from his grandson Yukii that was found at the Illuminati, Inu understood the mess that had been created by these creatures trying to break the family bonds. First Satan tried to imitate his son Lucifer in order to make his sons Yukio, Rintoki, Night and others hate him but in reality Lucifer had not killed the priests nor had he done such damage to his own children. Then this lesser demon tried to pass off himself as Lucifer and tried to have his children and descendants believe they had been children or grandchildren of his son. Fortunately, his son had been kind and adopted them without question even though this Rushifer had abandoned those children.*
