It is 2016. Super-powered beings have been showing up in large numbers for years. People are unaware why. Some types have always existed, though are not known to the general public. (Mages, supernatural and some supernatural martial artists.) This influx of super beings has caused problems all about the world as their mere existence changes the face of the earth.
Public opinion on metahumans are mixed. Some people think they are cool, a lot more people are afraid of them. Some see them as hope. Others as destruction. Metahumans are a mixed bag. Some stealing because they have developed powers and others because they are homeless.
Outside of metahumans, mythical creatures do exist. However, most of them are either hidden among society, not known among general knowledge. And others are from other dimensions or even universes. Such as demons and warrior races otherwise from fantasy. The level of technology in this world is in general slightly more advanced than modern day, and is at first glance what one would expect in 2016 mostly. However, very advanced technology exists on the earth and is made by some people, or things that aren’t human.
Another thing I feel worth mentioning is that superhumans and supernatural phenomena have existed before now, however it has been mostly limited to psychics, magic users and otherworldly beings until recently.
Third world countries have it the worst in the world. But one place with a particularly large amount of metahumans is Elium, a city in the united states. This city is under mostly martial law. The police and military are combined and have heavier weapons, equipment and vehicles. It takes the place of new york and is structured the same. However, it is slightly larger and incorporates a part of new jersey
The areas are each different from the actual new york in how they are.
1. Artemis district (Manhattan): Corporate area. Also the safest area, having the most police and military. Contains many finished businesses. Time square exists here. Notably where the E.L.N Network is based (Elium local news network)
2. Haven district (Bronx/Harlem): Upper class residential area
3. Neon district (Queens): Industrial district.
4. Green district (Brooklyn+long island. Long island is off the map): Middle class area of the city. Most comparable to RL NY. The area has good and bad.

Update:
Chinatown added (JFK International air port). South of the Neon district, it is considered apart of the green district
5. Axel district (Staten Island): Destroyed area of the district containing mostly looters/Homeless communities. Site of the second American civil war, between law enforcement and metacriminals.
6. Arclight district (Jersey city area): Worst part of Elium. Nobody will say it, but the place is pretty much ruled by criminals. Most crimes here happen indoors. Not many people choose to live here. However, horrible things do go on here, and many people part of organized crime go here regularly. A lot of crimes do not happen out in the open. Gangs here are actually pretty quick to come down on anyone who wars here, as this area is mostly considered neutral territory.
Statue of liberty does not exist.
