A Normal Day in Class Crescent Moon
-
((alright, Let’s start this off well! hooray!!))
I yawned as I walked into the classroom early. Stein had gotten there a few minutes ago, and I expected to be the only student there. I sit down in a corner of the classroom and pull out my notes from yesterday. This was my routine, day after day after day… It was boring, except when I got to go hunt for Kishin Eggs. That was the fun part.
-
I hurry into the classroom a little while after my classmate. I would have gotten here sooner but the carpet bag I use to carry my books and supplies is a lot heavier than usual today. Finally though I get to my seat, right up front and center, a little out of breath. Tossy bleats angrily and jumps out as soon as I open the suitcase. He doesn’t like being smuggled in like this, but I was supposed to leave him outside since he keeps chewing the desks. “Shhh! wait, what did you-” I notice the notebook hanging out of his mouth and yank it away. I knew it, last week’s lecture, completely shredded. “Stay here.” I say, bonking him on the head with the half eaten book. I’ll have to find someone to copy these from before class starts. I’ve never talked to that girl much, but….
-
I look up from my notes as someone enters the classroom. Oh no, another person. Better put my headphones on. I slip my white headphones on, the Shinigami skulls on either side glinting. They were actually kind of cute, I thought. I begin listening to my music to look busy, my dad’s favorite song. Step Up, I think it was called. I smile slightly at the song, then brush some of my white-blonde hair out of my eyes. It would be awhile before class started, so I was fine with my music for now.
Wait, was that a GOAT?! I sit straight up in my seat as I think this. How unusual, to see a goat in class! He looked pretty cute, I guess. He was eating that person’s notebook, so he was probably content. I stare at the goat for a few more moments before shrugging and returning to my studying and note-taking. My expression may have been mistaken for something along the lines of “too-good-for-you,” but it was really just my natural expression. Small things like that had earned me a bit of a bad reputation. “Don’t get in Samantha’s way, she’s the daughter of a Death Scythe!” “She thinks she’s too good for anyone else. Stay away from her.” And other whispers like that had caught my ear from time to time, but I chose to ignore them.
-
Oh, that was Samantha. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to risk pestering her. I’d never met her but I’d heard rumors. But on the other hand, I didn’t want to lose all that information. So I held my breath and hurried up the stairs, only looking back once to be sure that Tossy was staying put. He wasn’t. “Hi!” I smile, standing next to her and tapping her on the shoulder.
-
I jump in surprise and look up. “Come again?” I ask. I hadn’t been paying much attention, so I hadn’t had the chance to lip-read like my father did so skillfully.
But seriously. Did he actually just try to TALK to me? This was a relative first, at least with strangers. Maybe, just maybe, he wouldn’t be afraid or anything… Hopefully.
-
“Could I borrow your notes from last week for a few minutes?” I say nervously, but trying to keep a friendly smile. “I like your headphones.” I add, trying to win her over.
-
I stay silent for a few minutes, thinking it over. Did I want to risk my notes being eaten by that goat too? But, he was actually talking to me, for once. I couldn’t just turn that down. I nod my head. “thanks. Sure, I guess you can borrow my notes…” I mumble. I rummage around in my bag, trying to find my notebook. “Ah, here it is.” I say, pulling out a crumpled white notebook with the Shinigami skull on it. “Make it quick…” I say as I hand the beaten-up notebook to him.
-
I walk into class relatively late, as usual. I sit down next to Tartarus, I don’t really know him, but who the hell else am I gonna sit with? I mean it’s not like I have many friends anyways. “I wouldn’t go near Samantha if I were you,” I whisper to him as he takes a notebook from her, “You’ve heard the rumors, right?” Being the gossip I was I obviously heard about her being the daughter of a death scythe.
-
“Thanks!” I gush gratefully before going back to my desk and grabbing a pencil which had only been about two thirds chewed up and copying the text as quickly as I can. “She… Has very pretty writing.” I offer, not wanting to offend Samantha or ignore Meg. It’s not easy, sitting in class with very powerful and wealthy people when you’re a very weak farm boy. “I bet it took a lot of practice. My writing always looks like chicken scratch.”
-
Barely noticing someone new had entered the classroom, I turn my music up to that it was the only thing I could hear. WHile I wait for Professor Stein to get to here, I idly sketch out a drawing of a guinea pig. Guinea pigs were the best things ever, in my opinion. This one was smiling warmly at me in a cartoony style, a bit of fur covering one of its eyes. I draw a tiny speech bubble next to it and write in, “You’re the best friend ever!” just for good measure. Because why not? I would probably throw it out after class anyways.
-
Looks like Samantha was going back to being her loner self and Tartarus was going to continue being nice. So, I did what I always do; I pulled out my phone and turned up my music. My headphones weren’t in, but stein didn’t seem to mind considering there wasn’t many kids in the class room to begin with. I sat there screaming the words to the latest song from my favorite band. I didn’t even pay atenchion to class… No wonder I was kind of failing class.
-
Tossy lost interest in eating the leg of my chair and leaned up to try to reach the desk. I pushed him away just as I finished writing the lecture and stood up, snatching Samantha’s book off the table before he could get it. Goats aren’t known being able to look sad, but mine has mastered the expression. “Fine…” I go back to my bag, pull out the apple I had planned to eat for lunch, and give it to him. “Thanks Samantha, I owe you one.” I beam as I set the white notebook back on her desk.
-
I sit forward and look around as someone else’s music manages to get around my headphones. I glance over at the person who had borrowed my notes, who was now setting them back on my desk. “Oh, no problem.” I mumble, probably not being able to be heard over the obnoxiously loud music. And I though Dad was bad… at least he used earbuds.
-
I fell backwards in my chair after finishing my sick drum solo. No had really noticed yet, thank god. So I’m now just lying here on the floor, my music still blasting, and all I have to say is, “wow, that was awesome.” It came out as a whisper so no one could hear, but I heard. That’s all that mattered, because I only need to have myself to have a nice time.
-
I cluck with frustration as I glance at my watch for the tenth time this morning. Why had I woken up so early? There was enough time before class that going now would mean awkwardly waiting for more students to arrive either by myself or worse, with Professor Stein! Still, there wasn’t quite enough time to go back to my dorm room and sleep either. Sighing, I grudgingly enter the classroom. Worse comes to worse, I could just read my novel while I wait.
As soon as I enter the classroom, my eyes widened. Loud music blared throughout the room, and was that a goat in the classroom? Did a student really smuggle in a goat to class? And was that goat the beast responsible for several of the bite marks on the wooden desks? Also, who would bring a live animal to one of STEIN’s classes? What if we were dissecting something today? Grinding my teeth slightly to stop myself from yelling at Tartarus first thing in the morning, I walk past my classmates and pick a seat directly behind them, throwing my backpack onto a seat beside me.My seat choice turned out to be a mistake because of the loud, raucous music playing from Meg’s phone. I begin counting backwards under my breath to drown out the horrible noise. “100, 99, 98…”
