The basis of the Saotome style is getting in your opponent’s head and using this against them.
In general, the Saotome School is the more aerial of the two branches, with practitioners performing feats of acrobatics during their fights. Mid-air combat is the specialty of this style. In this respect, it is probably the closer of the sub-systems to the original school of Happosai, since the latter also prefers to go to the air when fighting. A flawless sense of balance and the ability to make prodigious jumps are necessary for complete mastery, and the student who cannot achieve either soon turns to another style. Great, soaring leaps — two to four or more times the artist’s height — are a trademark of the Saotome school. This is also the more offensive of the two branches its sheer speed giving its practitioners a huge advantage. The Saotome school is also host to a number of offbeat, diversionary techniques named after animals, such as the “Crouch of the Wild Tiger”, which are one of the school’s hallmarks. Training for the Saotome School involves turning everything, even mundane events into training exercises, as well as experimenting with many new techniques (as is the way of Musabetsu Kakutō). This willingness to experiment, however, can lead to some unexpected results.
The Saotome School can easily transition between all forms of non-grounded combat as aerial combat is actually quite similar to underwater combat and zero gravity combat.
