“New York, huh?” mused the girl who had just wandered into the dilapidated metropolis. “The way the grown-ups talked about it, you’d think it was some kind of Promised Land.”
The shadowy figure beside her laughed. Rage always laughed at her jokes, though she never really made any. He was a weird guy. “So, where should we settle down for the night?” he asked. “There are bound to be others here, and I doubt they’re as friendly as me.”
She nodded, taking her pistol in hand and turning to one of the burnt out buildings. “Let’s check here first. And we’re gonna need to find food tomorrow if we don’t wanna starve.”
-
Zed parked outside the motel/bar and told Black to stand guard while he checks them in and gets a drink.
Few minutes after Zed comes back out with food for Black and the two retire into the bar.
-
Rage touched J.C.’s shoulder, making her turn and see a motorbike parked in front of a building that seemed to have persons inside. She frowned deeply and looked to her companion. “Do you want to stay there, or something? It looks crowded…”
He smiled. “Yeah, let’s crash there for the night. I’m sure it’s a helluva lot safer than some random building.”
She nodded and turned towards it. “Alright, but if this goes south, I’m taking your lunch tomorrow.”
The figure just laughed. J.C. mumbled a bit to the owner of the hotel, asking for a room. It had been much to long since she had spoken to an actual human. The key was handed to her and she took a seat at the end of the bar away from the other patrons.
-
Zed notices the young girl across the bar and approaches her
“You look like quite a young lady, mind if I buy you a drink?”
He orders the two drink and continues to talk
“The wasteland is a dangerous place for a little girl, especially on her own” -
She eyed the man with suspicion, glancing to Rage who simply shrugged, unfazed by the man ignoring him. “I know the danger,” she answered him. “And I can handle myself just fine.” Their drinks arrive and she takes the metal cup in hand, studying it.
-
“So you say, but the bandit out there do despicable things, age or gender mean nothing to them”
Zed downs the hard liquor in one gulp and orders another
Black comes over and Zed orders him some morsels to snack on -
“Don’t treat me like a kid. You don’t even know me.” She took the drink and tried to take a drink, but could barely hold it back, her eyes widening in alarm. “How do you drink this?” She set the cup down as though it had personally offended her, while Rage laughed beside her. She leveled a glare at him.
-
Zed laughed at her
“Years of practice and alcoholism, which you lack experience in.”
Zed takes her drinks downs it and orders her a soda
“Maybe this’ll be more palatable for ya kid” -
Still dubious of the drink presented to her, she sipped lightly at it. It was sweeter than she expected, but she found she liked it. “I do have a name, though. It’s J.C.”
-
“I’m Zed, and my furry buddy here is Black Flag, or just Black”
Zed downs another shot and orders another
“This might be a stupid question in times like these but you have parents or family?” -
She shook her head. “They all died years ago. Bandits.” Another drink of the sweet soda and she continued. “I still had my dad do awhile, but he got sick and now it’s just me and Rage.”
-
“Oh is Rage your companion like my Black?”
Zed pets his animal companion -
“Yeah, he’s been with me for ages. He’s the one standing next to me.” She waved her hand to the seemingly empty air beside her.
-
Zed looks at her puzzled
“I doubt i’m that drunk but I don’t see anyone” -
A befuddled look crossed her face as she turned to look at Rage. He shrugged again before leaning against the wall. “He’s a bit odd, huh?” Rage joked, though J.C. was unaware the words fell from her own lips in a distinctly lower voice.
She rolled her eyes at him. “Play nice,” she chastised, her voice her own once again.
