Juno had Hewie up on a table in her lab with a section of his leg opened up revealing lots of wires. Juno tweaked a few things and closed his leg back up. Hewie jumped down and let out a happy bark. “There ya go, boy. You need to be more careful during training!” she said excitedly to get Hewie to do that cute little wiggle he does when he’s happy and wagging his tail. He ran over to Layla and laid down. Juno packed up her tools and put them away. She took a look around and noticed the rest of the lab was quite a mess. She always had little projects going when things were slow at work.
She heard a knock on her door after she started to clean up more of her lab. She walked over and opened the door. “What’s going on?” she asked inquisitively. She was ready for some action. One of the interns handed her some papers and left quickly. She had a weird affect on the interns, probably because she didn’t always conduct the quietest of experiments. She stood in her doorway as she looked over the papers.
“Hmm…”

Rylie walked into the club with her head held high and headed straight to the bar. She was wearing a dark green fitted satin dress, showing just the right amount of cleavage and tall black heels. She had a bad day at work today and needed to get her mind off of it. She sat down at a stool and motioned to the male beta who was tending the bar. He came right over and asked, “What would you like, ma’am?”
“I’ll have a scotch, neat.”
She sat at the bar for a few minutes staring into her drink, ignoring the fact that she was surrounded by others who would probably love her company. She downed the drink and ordered another, which she picked up and brought with her to the Alpha room. She sat down in a chair that didn’t have too many people around her. It was her first time at the club, and she didn’t know too many people outside of her field. She sat and savored her drink this time and observed the others around her.

Name: Dr. Rylie Anderson
Age: 28
Caste: Alpha
Occupation: Neurosurgeon
Appearance: She has long, dark brown hair which drapes elegantly around her when she’s not at work, but it pinned back and professional anytime she’s at work. She has dark green eyes and a stern look about her most of the time. She is tall and thin, often going to the gym to keep her mind and body limber for when she’s in the OR. She makes sure she looks professional at work, pencils skirts or slacks with button down tops (when she’s not in scrubs for surgery). Outside of work, she lets her feminine side loose but still always looks presentable.
Personality: Rylie is always poised and on guard around everyone. Being a female alpha can be difficult in a caste dominated by men. She does her best to always keep an air of dominance about her.Rylie comes from a family of people who have succeeded in the medical field. Her father was extremely proud to have an alpha daughter and always pushed her to be better than her peers. Rylie is grateful for her father and everything he has done for her, but she wants to make sure people know that her father wasn’t too big of an influence in her own success. She is a neurosurgeon at a top trauma hospital in the area. She flew through college, medical school and her residency. She became an attending surgeon at a very early age. She made sure to not do her residency or work at the same hospital where her father is a chief of surgery. Rylie revolves around her work, when she’s actually home she’s either researching, catching up on paperwork, or meditating/doing yoga to keep herself grounded in her stressful life. She decided to start going to the Gray Wolf Club for a little escape from her world.

Kane sat in his little, partially destroyed house playing with his soup but not really eating it. Demetrius left. He knew that his friend did this for the safety of his colony, but they weren’t safe. He knew what it meant when Demetrius left, and the plan was already in place.
He heard a loud noise and the ground shook slightly. “Shit” he said. He wanted to leave, but that wouldn’t be right. He couldn’t leave yet. He wasn’t sure if he would ever leave. He knew the answer but refused to accept it.
The plan was in motion, it’s going to be all right. The words were the only thing to keep his mind at ease. He knew the truth would make him fail.
“It’ll be okay, it’ll be okay…”
-
“His best friend’s name is Kane. He lives among the others in town.” she said sadly.
“I hope you know he won’t be that easy to catch. He may just be a human, but his drive to keep himself that way gives him more power than you’d know.”
She looks at both of them. “If you’ve accomplished what you’ve come for, then please leave. Your presence here is making me sick to my stomach.”
-
“I’m sorry that you were taken away from the things that matter in life, and I’m even more sorry that you’ll never know what it is that you are missing” she said, looking at him with pity.
“I’m not lying when I said he didn’t tell me where he was going. He knows the land well, but I’m sure he has no trouble going to the places he doesn’t know either. He’ll do anything to keep his people safe, even if that means risking his own life.”
Lilly sighed, “There was a man who sold him a map once though. He paid dearly for it, so it must have had some important information on it. He never showed anyone that map though, so I do not know what it contained.”
“And search all you like, I promise you he took everything that was important.”
-
Lilly glared at the girl. “You must be the one who is so determined to find him” she said. She then turned to the man, “You can question me all day and night, but he did not tell me where he was going. Demetrius is a smart man who is trying to keep himself alive. I’m sure he assumed you’d come looking for him here. He took his belongings and left. Thanks to your kind and your world-destroying war, I’ll never see my son again.”
-
Lilly could feel the cold emanating off of these two. They looked almost as though they were made of ice. One of these two had to be the one who was hunting down her son. If they found out where he used to live, they probably had a good chance at finding him wherever he decided to go. She tried not to worry too much. Her son was smart.
“Does it matter what I say? I’m sure you’ll do as you please either way” she said. She wheeled herself over into her living room next to the couch and some chairs.
“If you’re looking for my son, he is no longer here and will not be returning.”
-
Lilly, Demetrius’ mother, heard a knock on her door. She imagined it was Kane coming to check on her. He and Demetrius were so close. She still couldn’t believe he was gone. It all happened so suddenly. She knew the day would eventually come, but she still wasn’t prepared.
Kane knew it was okay to just come in though. She had been having many people come to visit her since he left. It must just be someone else coming to try and keep her mind occupied from the swelling sadness.
She wheeled herself over to the door and opened it. Shock and fear overcame her when she saw who awaited her on the other side…

“Where am I?” Demetrius asked, still groggy from the drugs that were injected into him. The old man continued to stare at him for a few moments before saying, “You are safe in my lab for now, young man”. He then turned to play around with a few vials of liquid, some that looked like they were filled with blood. Demetrius closed his eyes and thought: This was probably a big mistake.
The old man went over to a computer with the vials of blood and placed them within a machine besides his monitor. Once they were inserted inside the machine, the old man starting frantically typing and reading over everything that popped up on his screen. After a few minutes the old man walked over and said, “Your blood has high amounts of silicon dioxide in it. Teleporting around, I see? I’m surprised to see you’re still in one piece. My name is Dr. Nathaniel Brown. You seem to be in a bit of trouble with the Cold Ones, and you came to me for help. You must really be desperate.”
Demetrius looked shocked. How could the man possibly know that the cold ones were after him and that he was specifically looking for this scientist? His head hurt, and he still couldn’t really think straight. Dr. Brown continued, “I have eyes all over the place, young man. I saw your encounter with them. I hate to tell you that I have not figured out a full immunity to being turned and as for a cure after they are turned…” he turned and looked down towards a certain spot on the floor, “I sadly have not perfected that either.” Demetrius looked over where the scientist looked and saw dead bodies of cold ones and firekin. He jumped and pulled at his restraints, “What are you doing down here!?” he yelled.
“Don’t fight, it will only tighten the belts and make them more uncomfortable for you. I’m sure you’ve heard all the rumors about me that spread around this God-forsaken world. I can offer you one thing, but it will rob you of most of your humanity that you seem to be holding onto so dearly.” Dr Brown said, playing with a few instruments on a table next to Demetrius. “My humanity is all I have left” Demetrius said.
“Well, you’re going to lose it one way or another. You made that one female very angry. With this operation, I can give you a chance against being turned. Don’t get me wrong, they may still be able to turn whatever is left of yourself after this, but it will be much harder for them. Take it or leave it. It’s all I have to offer to you.”
Demetrius thought for a moment. He really didn’t have many options. He was limited with what he could do just as a mere man. “What are you going to do to me?” he asked.
“Don’t worry; I’ve performed many surgeries like this before. Not to the extreme that I plan with you, but enough that I know what I’m doing. You’re better off not knowing the details, young man.” Dr. Brown replied.
“Fine” Demetrius said, “I put my life in your hands, doctor.” Dr. Brown grabbed a syringe and plunged it into Demetrius’ arm. He fell back into a deep sleep… -
Demetrius woke up sore and cramped in his little hiding spot, but he slept better than he had in months. At home, he was always on alert in case their colony came under attack, whether from beast or from the elemental demons that now roamed the world. Even though his sleep was deep, he was plagued with strange dreams. One in particular lingered in his mind. It made him remember a map he paid dearly for.
A strange man had been traveling and found himself in the colony Demetrius lived in. He came with offers of rare goods to sell to the common people trying to live among the changing world. There had been rumors spreading for years about an old scientist who had brought his experiments to the brink of insanity. He was spurting nonsense about immunizations to changing into an elemental kind and cures for when you have just been turned. No one believed him, and he was cast out of society. The scientist gladly hid away and continued his work. No one was able to find him…until this strange man came along.
He claimed to have stumbled upon this scientist and found out where he stayed. When he came to the colony, he had a map. Demetrius ended up talking to the man and was told about this map. Demetrius thought it was rubbish, but deep down he couldn’t shake the feeling that this map may come in handy. The man wanted a lot for the map, and Demetrius had to give up a lot of the colony’s goods to get the map, but he bought it and kept it with him.
He took the map out of his bag, still nestled in his hiding place. He looked it over and found his location and compared it to where this mad scientist supposedly lived. He wasn’t too far away. Demetrius thought for a moment. This could be some sort of trap. The man could have made up the whole thing to trick him into giving away goods. It didn’t really matter now. He had nothing to lose at this point. Demetrius wolfed down some jerky he had with him and filled up on water and then set out to follow the map.
He walked for hours among bare fields. The more he traveled, the more he was losing faith in this map. He kept fighting the urge to just give up and go his own way. This map was leading him away from known sources of food and water. After a while he finally reached the point on the map where this scientist was supposed to be hidden, but there was nothing. Just more dying grass and dirt spread over the land. Demetrius sat down in the middle of the dirt and buried his face into his arms. “I should have known it was a waste” he said, defeated.
He suddenly felt something sting his neck. A bug, he assumed, until he started to feel woozy. Darkness overcame him and he was out cold. When he finally came to, his arms and feet were restrained and tied on a table, and an old man was standing before him. -

Demetrius walked for a while without any plan. He knew the land outside of his colony well, but they all kept close to where they settled. Maps were rare nowadays, and it had been a while since they last moved their settlement. He didn’t want to be a danger to the others though now that he was targeted by one of the cold ones. And so he wandered, hoping he could find another ruined town to settle in when he needed some rest.
Fighting his emotions was hard. He had nothing else to think about as he wandered through the silent plain. The world was grey and dying, so he couldn’t even lose himself in the scenery. All he could think about was everything he left behind. The friends he had made over the years of gathering survivors to stick together. Demetrius was 10 when his city was destroyed. Only him and a few of his neighbors made it out of the building before it crumbled to the ground. He would be forever grateful to Kane, his best friend, and his family for helping get him and his mother out of that place alive. They were a small group, but they grew as they traveled and finally settled in a town that was barely functioning.
Now, Demetrius would probably never see them again. He hoped they would be okay. Demetrius played a big part in protecting and supporting the colony. He was smart and strong. He was quick-thinking and able to come up with solutions to most of the problems they encountered. Now, he had a whole new set of problems to deal with.
He was lost on thought for hours, and didn’t even realize the sun had gone down. He needed to find a place to hide and sleep. He found a group of boulders with a space in the middle large enough that he could fit himself inside. He crawled in. It wasn’t comfortable at all, but it had to do. He was exhausted from hunting all day, escaping the cold one, and leaving his home. Because of the physical and emotional drain, he went right into a deep sleep.

Out of breath, Demetrius swore to himself and looked at his captor and listened to her words. He hasn’t been in this much of a jam before. He didn’t know how much longer he could fight being turned by one of these creatures. He knew the human population was decreasing at a fast rate. People were being turned everywhere he went. He wasn’t quite ready to give up yet though.
“As long as there are humans, there’s hope for this world that we live in. All of your kind will bring this world to it’s full demise.” he said. “Thank you for your lovely proposition, but today I chose both my humanity and my will.”
Demetrius fiddled with the bracelet on his wrist. Another grid formed around him, followed by an explosion of light. Once the light clearly, he was gone.
His body reformed in the middle of his colony. He fell to the ground in great amounts of pain. It felt like his body had been ripped apart and thrown back into place. After a few moments he sat up, still wincing from the pain. “Teleportation…I’m lucky I didn’t lose any limbs.”
It was experimental technology that only worked half of the time. He installed it just for emergencies, and he was glad he did. He looked down at his feet. “Damn…those were my best boots.” He also looked at his wrist and noticed the bracelet sparking. He took it off as he slowly stood up and dropped it to the ground. He grabbed the nearest rock and smashed the bracelet. It was no good anymore.
He ran back to his home where his mother sat in a rocking chair, looking out the window. “Oh Demetrius, where have you been? The hunting team came back an hour ago and you weren’t with them everyone was worried.” his mother said.
He went up to her and hugged her. “I’m sorry mother, but I’ve been targeted by one of the cold ones. I barely escaped and probably infuriated her in the process. I don’t think she’ll give up on me that easily. Please, when Kane comes by tell him he needs to move everyone underground. It’s not safe here for us anymore.”
His mother tried to hide her worry. She knew what he did for the colony was dangerous and accepted a long time ago that she might lose him, but she still wasn’t ready for this moment. She grabbed her son to hug him again, “I love you, Demetrius. Always remember that.” Tears ran down her face as she held onto him.
“I love you too, mom” he said as he released her grip on him. He went to the closest and pulled out new boots, put them on, and grabbed a bag full of emergency provisions. He then went to a table and grabbed a different bracelet and put it on. It wasn’t as well constructed as the other one, but it would have to do. He went over to his mother one last time and kissed her forehead before heading out and away from his home.
