Tom sheathed his weapons and began to leave with Dovaro but then he saw Miwa.

“I know it is not my place to intrude, but you’ve overused your magic. You’ve blocked three different instances of danger and then you’ve gave an awful lot of it to me. I warn you, not as a threat, but as a friend. Do not continue to use so much at a single time. Like a light bulb, you’re fine if you wait between usages, but if you burn the fuse, you’ll lose it forever. I know this too well, How else do I have so much experience with alchemy without any magic to fuel it. For me it was sudden; I simply tried to mutate a large mass. Not only did I fail, but I lost someone special to me because of it. Please, Miwa. Tell me truly, are you alright? I’m sorry to ignore you Dova, I’ll answer your questions later.”

“Hello, Dova, nice to meet you,” he said faintly. Tom’s head was spinning from overusing his alchemy and his ears were ringing from the explosion. Only once he switched off his intense concentration did he feel the trepidation of using a different being’s magic.

“Is everyone alright? Mr. Ken, I think that everyone who was here should get to go to the party, including Ash since she/he was part of our group. I don’t think it’s fair to exclude Takra and that blue-haired girl as the only two who can’t, though I’m not sure if they’ll want to come.” Tom switched topics. “Actually, Dova, I don’t have a room-mate yet, so you’re welcome to come with me. Oh, I almost forgot, my name is Tom Blanc.”

Tom deflected some of the metal tendrils with his sword, and set the others off course with his magnum. He suffered a small cut, but it was negligible.

Miwa’s starting to get tired, and pyromancer can’t spark the flame properly. Jerrel is too busy with the shield to detonate so I should do it myself. Luckily, it’s clear that the transmutation is successful. I can’t understand. why it’s not solid, or neither why it isn’t rusting. Perhaps my sodium-11 was especially unstable. The humid environment created by Miwa’s melting ice and the heat from pyromancer make this an ideal scenario.

    “1…2…3…! Clear!”

Tom sent another spark flying towards the golem. If ignition was successful, then the group would be treated to beautiful yellow fireworks.

    “Brace yourselves!”

“Pyromancer, Miwa, finish it. Jerrel, we need a blast shield. I don’t suppose you could condense the air into a barrier of some sort?” Tom said as he plugged his ears with his fingers.

Tom read about a strange game called sburb on the internet and about its supposed significance. He equipped his gunkata-type strife modus as he ordered a server and client version of the game while he waited for something to happen.

(I went ahead and started because, you know, I really don’t any other way to start out.)

Tom relaxed as the massive amounts of energy flowed through him. He couldn’t deal with magic, let alone from a foreign source. Instead, he alchemized the very psions into something he could use. While the dummy was still, he channeled through his huge circle and performed his transmutation. Among nuclear alchemy, changing substances was excruciating. He ripped the very atoms of the golem and reduced them to those of sodium-12.

Tom felt something eerie in the magic he received from Miwa. It started to chill his body, so he discharged it by detonating the remaining alcohol vapors safely. The golem rusted over, but Tom couldn’t tell if he was successful and the transmutation pierced the surface. “Ok, Miwa, stop. Now, all we have to do is introduce it to water.”

“Please forgive me for addressing you so informally, but pyromancer, Jerrel, Miwa, Retreat,” Tom said as he finished his 7-pointed star. Once I finish my transmutation, the golem will be incredibly unstable. It works to our advantage because we can detonate it with some water.”

Tom’s deux ancestry reacted to his elevated danger. He grasped most of the things around him: Takra’s argument with Kurama, Miwa’s intense magic power, Jerrel’s mercurial nature, Dovaro’s  foreign and fiery genes. He even sensed a witch with unbelievable powers slumbering elsewhere. But on top of all else, he understood the chemical nature of the golem.

“Ok, Miwa, pump me with you magical power now.”Tom ran the numbers through his head.

Transmutation summary: unknown metal mass to sodium. Purpose: to make the golem easier to defeat

Acceptable percent error: 20% Probable percent error 4 to 15%

    Worst case scenario- premature detonation.

“Alright. Keep the golem distracted while I finish my circle. At the closest point,I’ll be within 3 meters of it. Keep it off me and get ready to condense some water on it. Miwa, once I’m done, channel some of your magic through me into the circle. I’ll take care of the transmutation and if I’m successful, then the golem will be nothing more than an animated chunk of sodium. Then we can finish it by just adding water,” Tom said while he finished his outer circle. He started darting in and out; to finish his circle, he had to dash between fourteen times. On the corner of his vision he saw a grey-skinned extraterrestrial, but took little to no notice.

Tom quietly thanked Miwa for saving his life. He approached the red-hot shards and examined them.

As I thought, it’s metallic. That means the only way to destroy it is to break its bonds. Alternatively, I can change the substance of the golem into something more workable.

“Miwa, Jerrel, I have a plan. Are you willing to cooperate? Jerrel, keep the dummy distracted. I’ll run over and create an alchemy circle around the gym. Then, Miwa, you have to help me transmute this monster.” Tom yelled to make sure everyone heard it over the whirling winds.Tom didn’t wait for an answer, and instead he started drawing with his chalk.

If it comes to it, I’ll have to do it myself.

That’s quite a challenge, all my weapons are physical. But, this is a perfect opportunity to practice my ethereal skills.

He ran to his locker and returned with his weapons and some chalk. The weapons are useless, but they made him feel secure. He drew a crude alchemy circle and inscribed a 7-pionted star. Then, he circumscribed a triangle.

7 represented the stages of contemporary alchemy, and 3 for the elements he would use. He made sure the circle was out of reach and couldn’t be interfered with.

Luckily, today, I don’t have to perform a transmutation, there’s plenty of raw material.

Tom calmed his heart and mind, falling into a void. He felt nothing; greed, anger, pain, excitement. Nothing at all.

Channeling through his impromptu alchemic circle, he gathered the water molecules in the air and the carbon atoms settled on the floor. He alchemically synthesized them into alcohol molecules and deposited them on the dummy. Then, he removed his sword from its sheath and rubbed the two together. He shot a few sparks at the dummy and hoped for combustion.

“Hello sir. As for magical powers, I only have the knowledge to do alchemy, not any actual prowess. I have another technique, but I’m not sure it counts as magic. Temporarily, I can block out all feeling and emotions from my mind. It sure does sound far-fetched, but it’s the only technique I can claim to myself.”

Tom ran to the source of the sound, but It was already done. He watched in awe as the two greeted each other. Amazing, he thought to himself. Tom felt rather ashamed at his own swordplay; he was inhumanly good, but those teacher’s were incomparable. Even the grandmasters who trained Tom didn’t look like they would last a nanosecond.

Then he reached an uncomfortable understanding:

How did they learn how to do that? Even being superhuman didn’t mean their swordplay would be like that. Who trained them, or rather, what have they gone through to reach that level?

Should I do anything about Baylet? I am a slayer-in-training, but I really don’t think she’s really going to kill anyone, right?

No, I’m pretty sure Godal would get really upset any ‘students’ of his committed murder.

Tom was left alone in a library. It really helped to clear his mind and ferment his thoughts.

Actually, I’d like to see how this unfolds.

“Hello Miwa. Don’t worry we can get through this,” Tom tried desperately. “Anyway, we’re supposed to have a fourth member, a certain Adastrea; can someone go look for her?”

    Tom thought carefully.

Why would Godal purposefully make teams that are doomed to fail? And that Takra. He must really be something to be able to contain such a strong demon. Never as my work as a slayer have I felt such a overwhelming presence.

Tom listened just a little more and then headed towards Ash. “Hello, I’m Tom, I hope to make your acquaintance.”
