A warlock shook Kel’s shoulder, much more violently than he could have, Kel thought. “Come on,” snapped the warlock, and practically dragged Kel out of his cell and into the arena. Kel had barely any time to react before he was placed in front of a boy with literally spiky hair, blue skin, and slit-pupil grey-blue eyes.

“H-hello -” he stammered before the guard hit him with a sharp blow to the back of the head that left him seeing stars. “No time for pleasantries, boy. You end up just hugging it out, the crowd sure won’t be pleased. Get on with it.”

I wasn’t built for this, Kel thought desperately, the reality of the situation hitting him like a twenty-foot boulder. He hadn’t even watched the other fighters’ tactics, too caught up in their bloodlust, their complete lack of aversion to murder. Heck, he hadn’t even fought a single battle yet. Staring up at his enemy, who was at least half a foot taller than him, Kel wondered how, even back on the streets, he had ever expected to survive.

Glumly, Kel watched one girl up in the stands buy some chocolate and sit down again to watch the unending murders. He couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking. Did she find solace in watching them? Revel in them? Misunderstand them altogether? He kind of wished he could get some chocolate himself, but, he thought as his stomach lurched nastily, he was pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to stomach it.

His attention was captured by another girl in the cell next to his, whose eyes were flashing unnaturally. Kel had to remind himself that this was perfectly usual in the world of Strangers, and that he wasn’t supposed to run from them anymore, and that, even if he tried, there was nowhere to run. He kept his eyes fixed on the girl as her eyes closed and she smiled, evidently asleep.

He had seen how she had struck down that man, with a simple blink of her eyes and a sadistic laugh. Petrified with fear, he twisted his hands, silently praying, once again, that he wasn’t picked to fight next.

    Oh…right.
Appearance: He’s pretty short, with golden hair that takes on an unusual sheen in the sunlight. His eyes are blue-green.
Fight Tactics: He uses no weapons, instead slicing at the enemy with his claws or nails, though only when absolutely necessary. When panicked, he can bite hard enough to break even the toughest human’s skin, and likely even a Stranger’s.
Abilities: Can turn into nearly any large or small cat, but only for so long.
Personality: Kel is outgoing, but often makes the mistake of immediately disliking those who aren’t. His talkative nature often gets him into trouble, and he can never keep his own secrets, except for the fact that he’s a Stranger. This is the one thing he hates most about himself, so until his capture, he kept that fact from all his friends. The one time he did let the secret slip to someone, he was too abashed and fearful to speak to that person again. Kel is easily intimidated, but once he gets over this, if required, he will fight anyone to the death for what is important to him.

His name is Kel. Yup, just Kel. He can remember little of his past except for his mother, who never said a single word to him, but cared for him with incredible dedication until the day she was killed by guards when in leopard form. From then on (he was about nine) Kel roamed the city, occasionally transforming into a cat, as was his specialty, and sneaking a piece of bread or a similar food from a street vendor. One day, when Kel was only thirteen, one of the vendors noticed him, captured him, and put him on a leash, perhaps to sell him to the highest bidder later. Unable to hold his transformation for so long, Kel became human, and, immediately alarmed, the vendor drew a steak knife; Kel instinctively transformed into a lion – which had never before happened to him – and lunged at the man, fatally biting him. The guards were immediately summoned. They chased him all the way through the city, finally cornering him against the wall and taking him to the arena, where they trapped him in a cage and waited for his transformation to abate so that they could record his identity and thrust him untrained into the arena battles.

Kel waited behind the arena gates, practically petrified with fear. Watching the innumerable fights in which he would have to participate soon wasn’t helping to ease it, but it was better than reflecting on what had gotten him here in the first place. Too late – he could practically hear the soldiers chasing him, see the ground flying by at lion’s eye level, feel the dried blood coating his face. He wasn’t proud of what he’d done, but, as logic dictated, he’d needed to do it…or had he? He reached up and ran his hand over the top of his head, feeling the lion’s ears that were left over from his transformation. That always happened, weirdly – and unluckily, as it was killer evidence for his hunters.

Kel readied his bow and arrow as he stepped stealthily behind a tree close to the tiger, the young girl, and the…was that some sort of tree nymph? He’d have to be pretty careful if he was to be sneaking around here. He sized up the tiger, the most apparent threat, wondering how long it would take to outrun it or take it down if it noticed him.
