{Background}

Born Wen Hua’Ling, Wei MuLan and her brother Wen Yuan are the last remaining blood descendants of the now-extinct Qishan Wen Sect. As a child, she and the rest of the Wen Sect remnants were sheltered by Wei Wuxian at the Burial Mounds, until the First Siege resulted in her family’s massacre and Wei Wuxian’s death. Hua’Ling was kidnapped by bandits of lower ranking cultivation. They raised her and renamed her MuLan and taught her to fight. She managed to escape them in a clan fight and when all had died she alone remained. She was found injured and near death by Lan Wangji who had taken her back to Gusu with him. Finding out who she was he had taken her as his own as he remembered who she was to Wei Ying, his daughter he adopted along with Yuan.
