Dusty continued to run through the woods, the hawk telling him that he was close. But that didn’t bother Dusty none. He just wanted food. And so he continued to run, thinking about food, before bursting out of the forest and seeing a strange sight: a man and a woman in front of him. So Dusty found it logical to approach them, and question who they were, and more importantly (at least to him) if they had food. Screeching to a halt in front of the two, Dusty accidentally let go of Pumpernickel, who flew off of his shoulder and into the face of the girl who was there. Dusty was surprised by this, and rather sheepishly approached to pull Pumpernickel off of her face. “Sorry… He’s a bit excited.” he said, lowering his head somewhat. “Who are you guys anyway?”

After walking for 2 days on end, even without hallucinations, one begins to doubt their senses. Dusty was no different, and when he heard voices in the distance, he passed them off as wishful thinking, but as they continued, he became more suspicious. Upon calling the hawk back and confirming his suspicions, he rushed out to meet the strange new arrival, holding his sword with one hand and Pumpernickel with the other, so as not to lose him as his feet pounded against the damp grass.

Speaking from the heart here, or rather the proverbial one, as usually one speaks with their mouth, you probably haven’t trekked through miles of barren desert. If you have, well, congratulations. Surely then, you feel empathy for Dusty. If you haven’t experienced this, consider yourself lucky. Ironically, Dusty was, at this moment, considering himself lucky. Walking for a few days now, with nobody except for a hawk and a not-hawk to keep him company, he was surprised he wasn’t hallucinating yet. Again, his separation from society held him back, but he had heard of people in deserts seeing things, like mirages, and it driving them insane. Luckily for him, Dusty had two advantages going for him. For one, Dusty didn’t tend to take things for granted, perhaps stemming from his constant state of being on the run. Another advantage was Dusty’s magic. You see, Dusty was a firekin, and in the arctic deserts, especially at night, things could get a bit… nippy. Fortunately, he had some skill in fire magic, however he mostly only used it for cooking food and lighting arrows. His lack of reliance on his magic made him a bit rusty, but he more than made up for it in hunting skills, which he found useful once the seemingly endless walk finally reached something different from the desert he had grown accustomed to- the taiga. “Excellent.” Dusty said to himself and Pumpernickel. “We can get some food, or maybe find some other people.” And so Dusty walked on into the woods, hoping by chance to stumble upon other forms of life in his forsaken journey.

Dusty woke up cold. This was a bad thing. Dusty didn’t like being cold. Dusty also woke up hungry. Another bad thing. A pretty bad way to start the day, Dusty thought. Dusty questioned the fact of why he was so cold, until it dawned on him. It was always cold. Because Dusty was currently living in an igloo. Dusty was not the quickest one- especially in the morning. But I digress. Dusty was, indeed, living in an igloo. Again, not something that Dusty liked. But let’s backtrack a bit. However, at least he wasn’t alone, as he had a hawk and a slime to keep him company. You may ask yourself, why was Dusty in an igloo? Who the hell is “Dusty”? Why does he have a hawk? What’s a “slime”, and why does he have that either? These are good questions, but the answers aren’t simple. Dusty has a long, winding road that got him here, but you don’t need to worry about that right now. For now, all that matters is that Dusty needs food, and warmth wouldn’t be bad either. Warmth comes naturally to Dusty, as a firekin. However, food doesn’t come naturally to Dusty. What does one do when they need food? It had been a while since Dusty had been a part of regular society, but he at least knew the basics. He thought he probably should go looking for other people, maybe they could have some food for Dusty. This seeming like a logical thought to him. And so, having thought these thoughts, and an additional grumble or gripe about food, Dusty called Astora, the hawk, to scout ahead and Pumpernickel, the not-hawk, to sit on his shoulder and provide moral support. This made Pumpernickel happy. Pumpernickel was good at moral support. With the sun rising to the side and the igloo behind them, they set out in search of civilization.

“Yeah, that was her… As for him… Well, I’ll explain that all later. Or rather, if it boils down to it the notes back in my study should suffice. At any rate, Bakura’s right. We have to be ready for- ARGH” Mars fell to the floor, clutching his head in pain. “What… What’s going on?!?..” Hehe, my dear little plaything… My how you’ve grown… And it appears you’ve brought some friends. Very well, they’ll make excellent meals! mars doubled over in agony, his body writhing from the pain. “And now.. For a… What would you call it.. Human piñata?” Mars’ body lurched forwards, and flew up into the air before a rope materialized, wrapping around his neck. “hehehe… Anyone got a really long stick?… I’ll try to hit the candy your way!” The demon picked up the staff Mars had had at his side, and flew up and hit Mars’ limp body. “This will be… fun!… Hehehehehehe…..”

“What exactly do you want to know about her? I’ll tell you anything I know… But I’m afraid it isn’t much. I haven’t fought her head-on ever before… For obvious reasons. She prefers to lurk in the shadows and enter the minds of others, corrupting them slowly. She doesn’t like combat much, but I’m fairly certain she can hold her own.” Mars sighed and sat down in the dirt. “Nothing to do but wait for her.. I suppose. He said she would be here soon…” Mars trailed off, thinking of his meeting in his dream.
-
“Guys?..” Mars looked to see Kit and Bakura. “No, no! I don’t want you guys to die. But none of that matters now. Quickly, get ready to fight. She’s here.” Mars said, pulling out his staff and resting a hand on the sword at his side. “Just… Try not to die, okay?”

Mars sensed something strange happen in another dimension, slightly different from this one. He thrust out his hand and, perhaps by knowledge of the future or perhaps just insane luck, grabbed onto a strange boy’s neck. “I don’t care WHY you’re here. I don’t care who you are. But get out.” Mars slammed the boy’s body into the ground with insane force, blasting him a few miles into the ground before teleporting him back to the school. “Blasted fool…” Mars muttered, before returning his attention to the witch.

Alright… I should be close to her now. Mars thought to himself. I still can’t shake that unsettling feeling about what he said… Mars looked over Thrackerzod, and decided to take a break for a while. Looking down at his leg, he was shocked to see that there was a large gash in it, presumably from the forest he had flown through on the way here. It was oozing out blood, and Mars looked behind him to confirm his suspicions. “Shit…. shit, shit, shit!” Mars said. “I left a trail! They could follow me here….” Mars did the calculations in his head, there was no way he could undo all that blood in the time he had. He just had to press on and hope he wrapped things up before they did. He got a small thing of gauze out of his bag, wrapped it around his leg, and proceeded onwards. Almost there…. Mars flew onward, before being blasted off of his steed by a tremendous force. “Thrackerzod! No!” Mars ran over to the pegasus. “Not now… You have to stay alive! Mars lay down over the pegasus, cast a quick spell, and teleported the body back to his home. I can only hope the other pegasi find him and help him… Mars got up, blinking away tears. “Alright, witch. I’m ready. Show yourself.”

Mars woke with a start. Filled with new strength, information, and somewhat troubling stress, he slowly got up and got dressed. Grabbing his staff off of the wall, he lifted it up into the air, before pausing for a moment. Do I really want to do this? Leaving them all behind… It’s my only option. Mars sighed, before nodding his head slightly. He lightly moved the staff up and down, forming a cross in the air and casting a weak concealing spell, as he wanted to conserve energy for the fight. He looked down at his hands to confirm, that, indeed he was invisible. He pulled a small note out of his bag, and went downstairs to the main section of the makeshift establishment. He placed the note on the main dining-room table, checking over it one more time before leaving the house, the weak invisible barrier still preventing him from being seen by normal eyes.
Kit and Bakura,
I’ve made my decision, you can’t stop me now. I shouldn’t have gotten you guys involved and I don’t want you killed on my behalf. Please don’t attempt to follow me… You guys are my friends, I don’t want you dead. In the unlikely event that I don’t make it back…. There’s going to be a girl that comes to this school. She’ll need a teacher. Bakura, I wan’t you to keep hold of all of my possessions until she comes, then give them to her. ESPECIALLY the black book with gold trim lying upstairs. It’s got a password on it, but she’ll know the answer. Help her, you guys. She’s my only hope left. Good luck and goodbye,
–Mars

“Welcome back, Kit.” Mars said. “Sorry to bring you somewhere so… barren, but oh well.” Anyway, I figured we’d make camp here in a while, and get ready to search a little later.” Mars opened his back and pulled out a small tan box with a blue triangular top, and set it on the ground gently. “And for my next trick…” Mars pulled out a sleek black wand of the bag. “I never really did like wands, but my staff’s outta juice from the portal. He swished and flicked in the proper Harry Potter style, and the box grew steadily to form a small house, big enough for the three of them to stay in, at least temporarily. “Now if you’ll excuse me…” Mars walked inside and promptly collapsed on a bed upstairs, weakened from the overuse of magic. However, his dreams would not be so peaceful. As he fell asleep, he heard a voice rumbling deep inside his head. “Mars… It’s time we had a talk again.”
-
Mars took a step back to avoid Bakura tumbling into him. “Where’s Kit?” he questioned. “Is she on her way? Or busy with something else? If she can’t make it, that’s fine, I’m not forcing her too. Quite frankly, I’m surprised you guys are so willing to help me at all.” Mars sat down for a moment and pondered the voice he had heard. The one question answered showed so many more unknown, secrets he couldn’t possibly hope to discover. He thought for a second it might be the witch, but she couldn’t have contacted him while he had a soul. Nonetheless, he got up from his meditation, brushed off his pants, and said “Whatever. Let’s wait for her here.”

Mars arrived in a small forest in a planet far away from the school. “Guess I better text the rest of the guys and tell them it’s time…” Mars pulled out his phone and texted Bakura and Kit. “It’s time. Go to my house in the clouds (its almost directly above the school). Go to the bookshelf, pull the book ‘Magic for Dummies’, and go down the path. The portal will open when I am ready for you guys.” Mars took out some chalk, and inscribed runes reading “Rok wo steg yaav daar rei fent kos sent wah kobiil miiraak, neliik fein qo.” in a small circle. He removed a small cyan gem from his bag, placed it in the middle of the circle, and began to chant. “Fid niin het, voth nelvaas! Fid niin het, voth nelvaas! Fid niin het, voth nelvaas!” The gemstone began to glow, and forces stretched it until it was a thin circle. It split and opened, revealing a study that looked somewhat familiar…

“Well Thrackerzod, we should be getting close. Just a few more hours.” Mars fiddled with a small pendant with a picture on it, of some unrecognizable girl. “I have a plan… and assuming the worst I can still do this without endangering Kit and Bakura… I just hope it doesn’t come to that… If I can best her in combat first, we won’t need to cast that spell…” Mars adjusted the pendant, and for a brief moment it flashed 6 colors. Red, green, blue, yellow, black, and white. It shimmered before returning to normal. “I just hope I can keep this much mana under control…” Mars… “Who’s there?” Mars, it’s me. “You? Not again… What is it this time.” I wanted to wish you luck in your fight… And, should it come to that… I have a prophecy to give you. “Nonsense. Nobody can predict the future.” Oh really? Still, you must heed my words. Her name will be Ruboris. She will come here with two others, both boys. They will need to be trained. They must be trained, they are vital to the sake of the world and your dream. ”When will they arrive?” Soon enough. They will have traveled far, and someone will have to take care of them. “I… I still don’t know who you are. Tell me that, and perhaps I will follow your instruction.” Very well.. I am… The voice softly said a name, which echoed through Mars body like an empty room. “Impossible! But… how?” I don’t have much time left, Mars. You have to do this. Stop her! Whatever the cost! Mars sunk down in the saddle, the voice was gone. “I don’t understand….” Mars fell asleep, and dreamed of the future, Thrackerzod keeping him stable in the saddle.
