“I…” Okay, that was interesting enough. But not terribly helpful. “I don’t know if that’s really true for me. I kinda avoided people even before I had powers. And I never saw much use for them until now. They just seemed… dangerous. But they haven’t activated since, and I don’t know how to, you know…” Ash trailed off and looked at Godal. “So… help how?”
-
Ash blinked. Wait, where was everyone? Weren’t they all in the gym just a moment ago? Perhaps more sleep would be a good idea. Passing out in the middle of important things like this wasn’t good. Now, to find the rest of the team… they probably went off to start strategizing. Some leader Ash was.
Just then Godal’s voice came on the loudspeaker. Oh, right. Godal. Powers talk. That was supposed to happen.
Ash walked to his office, realizing for the first time that they’d never been inside. Only right outside the door to get the essay assignment. Inside, things were all proportioned to the god-slayer. Seriously, wolves that big existed? Wouldn’t want to run into one. Though an ant wasn’t quite accurate for a size estimate, perhaps a dwarf or hobbit would be close to the truth. Ash took a seat in one of the chairs opposite his desk. “Yes?” Baylet could be heard knocking and yelling in the background.
-
((Ash continues to wait for a response from Godal after asking him what he wanted to say about Ash’s powers))
-
Ash nodded back and got up, giving Miwa some space. “If you want to join us when you’re feeling better, I’m gonna find us a room after I talk to Godal. Feel free to come help us plan our team out. You’re pretty strong and I hope you’ll help us.” Ash gave a halfhearted smile and turned, walking to Godal. “So.” A slight awkward pause. “My powers?”
-
Well, this was the team. Adastrea was nowhere to be seen. Miwa was huddling in a corner. At least Tom was amicable enough. “Hello, Tom. One second.” Ash had never been good at comforting anyone, but Miwa needed some comfort now and there wasn’t much of anyone else. If she was going to be on the team… The team might as well try to be there for her. Ash walked over and sat next to her.
“Hey. You alright?”
-
My team? What the… what? Perhaps this was just Godal trying to strengthen their weak points again, but… surely he couldn’t mean to make Ash the leader? That man… god… thing had entirely too much faith in their abilities. Still. You have to try.
“I. Uh.” Ash said, hardly over a murmur. “Guys come on. Let’s… uh… go find a room for our team.” A little louder that time, fairly audible if you could hear over Takra and Godal yelling at each other. Ash pushed the doors open and waved a hand like ‘Come on’ to Tom, Miwa, and Adastrea.

A lot of what Jerrel said didn’t make much sense to Ash. The strong ruled and the weak submitted, right? Ash had always been weak. Weak people belonged in the shadows. Where strong people wouldn’t slap them into walls.
Godal was strong. He demanded respect. But Jerrel thought differently. With Jerrel, respect was a two-way road. You had to respect others to be respected. Maybe they had different definitions of respect. To Ash, respect was just fear.
But the courage from earlier was returning. This was so strange, this feeling . That shadows weren’t where Ash belonged for the rest of eternity. Perhaps one day there would be a moment of glory.
Regardless, Ash wasn’t going to get involved in the argument. Wasn’t THAT bold yet. Besides, this taem conversation was important. Godal was right about one thing- they had the advantage of not much infighting.
“I… I can move things. With my mind. I haven’t done it in a long time, though, and last time I did it ended up really badly.”
-
Welp, that was that. Apparently the teams were not up for debate. Maybe he made them so purposefully unbalanced hoping they’d pull together and settle their differences. Maybe it would work. Who knew. For now Ash was watching events unfold, wide-eyed. If there was a moment of silence, Ash would slip in a question. “So… what is our first task as a team?”
-
Whoa. All the troublemakers so far were on the same team. All the strongest ones. Meanwhile, Ash had… the healing angel, a new guy with as of yet no noticeable power, and a witch who slept all the time. Normally Ash wouldn’t have said anything, but… “Don’t these teams seem a little unbalanced?” Awkward silence for a second. Well, in for an inch, in for a mile. “I mean, none of us are all that strong. Meanwhile you have the world destroyer, fox demon, and guy who almost blew up the gym all on the same team. How are we supposed to compete against that?”
-
Ash’s head shook ‘no’. No questions. Let’s just get started.
-
Ash waited quietly and awkwardly, fists unclenching after the punch. Groups? Oh great, teamwork…

Ash watched it all quietly, then turned to Jerrel, the only person they’d already talked to some. “Are they always like that?”

A few minutes later, the heavily disguised Lucas was making his way through the back alleyways of the arclight district. He hadn’t been in this district since the cult days, but that gang was long dead and gone. However, he did remember a few key places, even if they wouldn’t know him. After all, he had a new face, and it had been years.
His wanderings brought him to the very same seedy mechanics shop, where he tossed back his hood. “I’ve heard you’re quite the capable man, Simon. I’ve got a bit of a project I’m hoping you’ll take me up on. It’s surveillance based. You can name your price. Interested?”
His red eyes morphed to a deep, oceanic blue as he spoke. Lucas spoke confidently, with an irresistibly likable smile. Of course, there were other shops if Simon refused, but old memories led him here. Perhaps memory was even a bad word- it had been so long it was almost like instinct. But sometimes you just gotta go with your gut.
