Godal gone. Baylet knocked out. Jerrel taking care of Miwa. Takra off raging in another room. Wraith vanished, but that was usual for him. That left Ash, kit (maybe?), and Umbra still playing.

“UGH. We can’t even play dodgeball without killing each other. Can’t we pretend to be normal for once?”

Irritated, Ash grabbed a dodgeball and stood opposite Umbra. “You and me, Umbra. Let’s go.”

Dodgeball. A rather normal schoolish thing amidst all the strangeness. Well, at least it was one Ash was good at. The exploration would have to wait.

The gym was easy to find… though not many were there yet. Until then, Ash waited on the bleachers.

X-0 smiles politely. “I have been programmed only with the most basic, common elements of human nature. Language, movement, et cetera. The rest is intended to be absorbed, so as to be as realistic as possible.”

    Query: Stay or leave?
Analysis: City has yet to be fully analyzed. Other elements could be learned from environment. However, hero emulation is higher priority. Follow blues if necessary, even if city is left. More can be absorbed from most areas, many of which remain unexplored.

Strange, how difficult it was to read this man. Sensors showed strange readings on him-almost none at all. And he did not follow typical human conversational patterns.

“My purpose for existing is to absorb information. By learning from the environment and contact with others, I will learn new skills and eventually emulate a human personality perfectly.”

At this point it was often polite to return a question, however strange. “What is your purpose for existing?”

Ugh. Nothing to do. The internet was slowly becoming droll. too much scrolling, too many games already played. Ash needed a break.

Perhaps now was a good time for that exploring. The outside of the mansion would be good to start- Ash headed out and started around the perimeter, checking it out. Who knows, maybe the crazy old man build some secret rooms in.

X-0 materialized just as expected. Not that it was difficult to ‘expect’ a robot. They were awfully predictable sometimes.

The last threat had absconded, but a new man had appeared. Perhaps another threat? Negative. Hero was speaking with him in a calm and kind demeanor. Threat unlikely. Investigation necessary.

X-0 walked forward and emitted the standard human greeting: “Hello.”

“Godal… Wants you… Yeah, I’m gonna go.” Ash had planned for this to go much better, but apparently a fight had broken out. Slowly backing away, Ash walked back to the office, only to discover that Godal was gone. Well then. Left with nothing to do, Ash returned to the sleeping quarters and decided to internet for awhile. Tumblr and online games. Might as well pass the time… Perhaps later exploring could happen.

((I’m not in front of you, blues. I dissolved and I’m pretty far away atm. I recommend you find other shelter… After all, the metal x-0 is made out of is NOT heatproof, it would blast through me and hit you anyways.))

Well, time to hand this in. Ash got up and scanned the paper, changed a few things, and printed it.

On the way to the printer, Ash noticed another girl. One who hadn’t been there at the office before, and didn’t look familiar. Perhaps that was Adastria.

One way to find out. Pulling together some courage, Ash walked over to the group, trying not to be too noticeable, and tapped the girl on the shoulder.

“Er, are you… I mean, is your name Adastria?”

    Legends tell of a raven.

This raven was jealous of man. It wanted to walk among men, be one of them, fall in love and play and sing with them. Alas, it was a raven and could not sing, nor dance, nor fall in love. Instead it cawed on the trees, screeching at the people below that it longed to be.

One day, the sun god, Sola, took mercy on the raven. “If it is truly what you wish, I can make you human. However, the change is permanent. You can never be among your kind again.”

The raven instantly agreed, ecstatic at the chance to live out its dreams. The sun god shone her rays on the black feathers, and they became locks of hair. The wings became long, delicate arms, and the scaled, tough feet became beautiful long legs with perfect feet. “Your name will be Raven, for although your body has changed, you cannot escape yourself.”

Raven was overwhelmed with joy and instantly ran off to a village, experiencing all that it could as a human. The sun god smiled sadly.

A year later, Raven found the sun god again. “I have been human for a long time now, and I have learned many things. With every love, there is heartbreak. With every song, there is a sword. With every peal of laughter, there is the groan of pain. There is no light without the darkness for man. No life without death. Man is trapped on this earth, searching for purpose; I miss the days I could soar carefree above the ground. No song is worth the loss of liberty; no beauty is worth this pain.”

The sun god shed a tear. “Alas, you are more trapped than most, poor Raven. Although they have never tasted ignorance, you have been free and unbound by the fetters of emotion. Now you have bound yourself, and there is no escape but death.”

Ash paused the writing. Perhaps this was a good place to stop. It was about a page long. Although it had no proper ending, somehow the end seemed poetically complete. Like life. The story was never really over. The raven might find peace, or it might not. But for now, it was enough.

((Um. I was swarming around to random other places. But yeah, sure, let’s assume I swarmed back over to you and allowed you to use my body as a weapon?))

    Process interrupted.

Having been grabbed, X-0 was knocked out of the attack loop, long enough to analyze the situation and determine the best course of action.

Assailant was… The hero. This confused processors long enough to freeze the system momentarily, during which X-0 was apparently used as a shield. There was no protocol, no logical response to this. More data was needed. However, with no real danger present, general course of action was to… Do nothing until another action became more feasible. Either by danger or opportunity.

“Inquiry: Fire source. No fire source available. High temperatures can damage the delicate circuitry used in nanotechnology. High voltage weaponry is capable of creating fire if fuel is supplied.”

Again, a completely normal human voice with… Strange words. The last sentence was demonstrated by a stream of current between X-0’s thumb and forefinger.

Meanwhile, other analysis: flammable substance present. Flames should be avoided at all costs. However, enemy also weak to flames. Solution: convince high voltage weaponry with projectile gun and take cover.

“Assailant can be incapacitated with a high voltage round. Take cover immediately, hero.”

X-0 raised the cannon arm and fired a round. At the end of the cannon shot was a taser, rather than a point, that delivered a powerful shock on contact. This round arced toward the ground, where much of the flammable liquid had pooled, right underneath the creature. X-0 promptly dissolved and floated away in the wind, avoiding the highly probable flames with height and distance. And just in time, too; as X-0 dissolved, a blast of acid came shooting in. Experience shows that nanobots are weak to this acid; avoiding it is highly preferable.

Nanobots remaining: 87%. Nanogenesis shifted to high priority technique.

Adastrea. Like Ash knew who that was. Oh, whatever. “Fine then, big… Adult.” Ash squinted sarcastically and walked out the door. “Adastrea… Sounds like a girl’s name.”

Everyone now seemed to be in the library. Good place to write an essay. Might as well start there.

Ash flipped open a laptop and did the usual when faced with writing an essay. Stare blankly at the page. “Perhaps a story counts as an essay? If it’s good enough?” Ash sighed. Most of the girls in here had been at the office already. Who the heck was a Adastrea?

“Your attack made contact and dealt damage.” X-0 replied to the apparent question. The swarm had stood firm this time upon being hit by the other bot, allowing him to bounce off and land in front of X-0. “However, damage appears to be healing. Damage done to loose skin on appendages is minor but not healing. Analysis: previously thought to be inconsequential points are in fact particularly vulnerable.” Though the nanobot collective spoke with the casual tone and inflection of a man, the vocabulary and manner of speaking were quite unusual.

Other problems presented themselves. Nanobot bullets disintegrated inside the creature’s body. This was not a renewable option. Two alternatives presented themselves: nanogenesis, to restore lost cells as they were used, or using other objects as projectiles. The first idea was filed for later analysis. The second was applied immediately.

Or it would be, if the process was not interrupted by a swarm of a couple dozen people. “Relocation necessary for shot preparation. Dissolving.”

As a car door flew through the space where X-0 had been only seconds ago, the collective reformed on the other side of the tentacled beast. Placing a hand on a nearby car, small nanobot blades cut the metal into new cannon rounds and sent them through the body to the other arm, which was still a cannon.

Primary target was now the sacs on the beast’s arm. Secondary targets were any infected humans that got too close. Normally flesh packets on a moving appendage would be near impossible to hit, but with computer prediction systems and near-perfect aim, it was much easier to hit.

The downside of using other metals for the Blues Cannon was that it took time to form rounds. Even with nanobots cutting and molding the metal almost instantly, it took about 2 seconds per round- much slower than the railgun-like burst speeds possible with nanobullets. If not for the acid blood, however, nanobullets seemed viable for other creatures. They could easily be retrieved after firing by dissolving them and rejoining them with the body.

Anytime too many infected closed in, X-0 relocated to a new location with a metal source. A rooftop with an air conditioning system. Other street spots next to cars. Inside buildings and taking from metal bedframes and machinery. This continued until some new element presented itself to disturb this pattern, or the creature was incapacitated.

“I-okay. But sir, I just got here… I didn’t see who was here. Who hasn’t visited you yet?”

Essay topics flitted through Ash’s mind. What to write about that could possibly interest a God-slayer?
